The Haven Kanaal means Harbour Canal is the old port of Batavia in 19 century. This picture was taken from Culemborg lookout tower heading. The white building with white columns wa The Stads Herberg or The City Inn. The other next building along to left of the trees was ' toll house" or "customs house " built probably around 1840s.You could see the open sea at the background. This is the main canal as the main entry point to Batavia for over more than two and half century. At the foreground the white building in the centre is Pasar Ikan " Fish Market" was built in 1846. Today this building is no longer exist. The area is still called as Pasar Ikan today. This location was the most famoust and ppopular views in the second haklf of the 19th century.
The Vierkantsbrug ( Square Bridge ) is visible in the left corner of the picture. It is demolished toward the enf of 19th century. Why the bridge was called Vierkant although it was not square as it was ? There was a long gone square building ( Vierkant ) during the old days of VOC existed just to west of the Culemborg lookout which the bridge finally took his name.
